Roughing It

The film begins in 1902 with an elderly Mark Twain preparing to give a graduation speech for his daughter, Susy. He reflects on his youth, specifically his journey to the Nevada Territory in the 1860s. Young Sam Clemens joins his brother Orion, the newly appointed Secretary to the Governor, on a stagecoach journey west. Along the way, they encounter colorful characters like Mr. Bemis and hear terrifying legends of the outlaw Slade. Sam is driven by a 'get-rich-quick' mentality, believing he can simply pick gold up off the ground. Upon arriving in Carson City, Sam finds government work dull and joins a survey crew. He becomes obsessed with winning a 'grubstake' through gambling, nearly losing his life in a high-stakes poker game during a flash flood. Later, Sam teams up with two prospectors, Higbie and the linguistically creative Mr. Ballou. The trio faces several disasters, including a snowstorm where they believe they are dying and make dramatic deathbed confessions—renouncing whiskey and smoking—only to realize they were mere yards from a warm inn. Sam's journey takes a somber turn when he meets Henry, a man who has spent 16 years waiting for his deceased wife to return, a delusion supported by the entire town. This encounter teaches Sam the danger of living in a dream. Eventually, Sam, Higbie, and Ballou discover a 'blind lead'—a secret, incredibly wealthy vein of silver. However, Sam is called away to care for a sick Orion, and his partners get distracted by another false lead. They fail to work the claim within the legal ten-day limit, and the fortune is 'jumped' by a rival. Broke but enlightened, Sam realizes his true talent is observing and writing about the world. He accepts a job at the Territorial Enterprise, using the pen name 'Mark Twain' for the first time, and the film concludes with his 1902 self advising the graduates to find their own life's calling.
