    Full story (spoilers)
The film begins with a stray dog wandering through the Kansas countryside, eventually finding its way toward the McCray family farm. Todd McCray, a 20-year-old with a deep empathy for animals, is introduced while caring for an injured hawk under the guidance of a local professor. After successfully releasing the hawk, Todd hears a radio announcement by Hayley Ronaldson regarding a program where families can foster shelter dogs for the Christmas holiday. Todd's father, George, a stoic Vietnam veteran, is initially adamant against the idea, fearing Todd will become too attached and be devastated when the dog must be returned on December 26th. However, George eventually relents, striking a deal that Todd must keep his room perfectly clean and handle all chores independently. Todd visits the shelter and chooses a scruffy, unnamed dog, whom he names 'Christmas.' As Todd trains Christmas, it becomes clear that George's resistance stems from his own past; he suffers from PTSD-related nightmares about a dog named 'Good Charlie' that he was forced to leave behind during a helicopter evacuation in Vietnam. Inspired by his love for Christmas, Todd begins a relentless campaign to find foster homes for the other 32 dogs at the shelter. He calls neighbors, enlists his siblings, and eventually catches the attention of a local news station. His heartfelt television interview, where he explains that 'everybody needs somebody to love them,' triggers a massive community response that clears out the shelter. On Christmas Eve, the farm is threatened by a cougar. Christmas heroically defends the livestock and the family, proving his loyalty and bravery. Despite this, George insists on sticking to their original agreement to return the dog on the 26th to teach Todd about responsibility and keeping one's word. Todd tearfully but obediently returns Christmas to the shelter. However, the separation is short-lived. Hayley calls the McCrays to offer Todd a job at the shelter, and George, encouraged by his wife Mary Ann and his own realization that he needs the dog for his own healing, decides they must adopt Christmas permanently. After a brief scare where Christmas escapes the shelter, the dog finds his own way back to the McCray farm, reuniting with the family for good.
