    Full story (spoilers)
The film begins with a nostalgic flashback to a Colluccia family Christmas, highlighting the importance of their Italian heritage and the secret family sauce, or 'sugo,' made by the matriarch, Donata. In the present day, Anna, a sociology professor who has spent years teaching abroad, returns home to find her mother, Madeline, departing for a vacation in Maui. Anna quickly notices that her grandfather Vincent, or 'Nonno,' is struggling with significant memory lapses. After accompanying him to an appointment with Dr. Greg, a kind neurologist, Anna learns that Vincent has moved into the middle stages of Alzheimer's. Greg suggests that sensory experiences, particularly smell and taste, are powerful memory triggers. This inspires Anna to attempt to recreate Donata's legendary sugo for their Christmas Eve dinner, a dish the family hasn't had since Donata passed ten years prior. Anna's mission involves investigative work, including interviewing the local butcher to find the specific cuts of meat and visiting an old grocer to identify a secret ingredient: 'colatura di alici' (anchovy oil). Meanwhile, subplots involve Anna's sister Ella, who is pregnant and overwhelmed, leading her to decide to sell the family farm—a move Anna initially resents. Their brother R.J. is also struggling, trying to prove himself as a chef at a local restaurant while feeling he lives in Anna's shadow. The emotional stakes peak when Vincent goes missing during a walk, eventually being found at the site of his first apartment, confused and lost in the past. This scare brings the family together, forcing them to acknowledge the reality of Vincent's decline. The resolution arrives when Anna finds the handwritten recipe tucked inside the pocket of one of Donata's old cardigans. On Christmas Eve, the family, joined by Dr. Greg, cooks the sauce together. Anna realizes she no longer wants to be an 'alone person' and decides to move back home permanently to take a local teaching position and support her family.
