Why we’d put this one on

Weirdness 8, and the gleeful premise: a woman legally named Krissy Kringle, living on Candy Cane Lane, gets fired right before Christmas and then receives Santa's real Naughty or Nice list, which reveals everyone's hidden sins. Hilarie Burton Morgan plays her with great comic energy, opposite Matt Dallas. The magical book literally tinkles when it exposes a secret, and Krissy is not above using it for a little light blackmail. There is also a mall elf faking an Australian accent because he watches Crocodile Dundee nightly. At 6.5, it is a cheeky, slightly chaotic holiday wish-fulfillment romp.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with Krissy Kringle, an advertising professional who is frustrated by her name and her life on Candy Cane Lane, a street where neighbors are obsessed with a holiday house contest. After a series of bad luck, including a broken water heater and a difficult morning, Krissy is 'released' from her job by her icy boss, Helen, while her manipulative coworker Jill steals her ideas and a promotion. At her lowest point, a mysterious book arrives at her house—the actual Naughty or Nice list intended for Santa Claus. The book magically reveals the secrets of anyone Krissy thinks about, accompanied by a 'tinkling' sound. Forced to take a job as a mall elf under a lazy manager named Justin, Krissy begins using the book to her advantage. She blackmails Justin into buying the staff lunch after the book reveals he is stealing petty cash, and she exposes her neighbor Debbie as a thief who stole other neighbors' decorations to win the street contest. However, the power of the book leads to a major crisis when Krissy looks up her boyfriend of six years, Lance. The book reveals he was 'with' Jill, leading Krissy to believe he is cheating. She publicly humiliates him at a high-stakes business lunch, potentially ruining his career. Krissy eventually realizes the book has two sides: the 'Naughty' side she has been obsessing over and a 'Nice' side she ignored. She discovers that Lance's 'tryst' with Jill happened years ago during a brief breakup and that he has never lied to her. Furthermore, the book reveals that Jill is actually a corporate spy sabotaging Helen's agency for a rival firm. Krissy teams up with a reformed Debbie—who turns out to be a secret philanthropist—and Lance to expose Jill's corporate espionage. Helen rehired Krissy with a 30% raise. On Christmas Eve, Krissy meets the real Santa Claus at a charity party; he takes his book back, advising her to look for the nice side in people first. The film concludes with Lance proposing to Krissy, who happily accepts and decides to hyphenate her name to Krissy Kringle-Leigh as it finally begins to snow.
