    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • A bureaucratic office in the sky that manages human dreams using physical tapes and Post-it notes.
    • The concept of 'Dream Police' who can manifest in the real world to enforce the universal order.
    • A protagonist agreeing to a supernatural memory wipe to save a man's career.
    • A dream associate who has never tasted pie and experiences it for the first time in the real world.

    Full story (spoilers)
The story begins with Grace McMahon, an aspiring writer living in Kalamazoo who works for a temp agency to pay the bills. She experiences a series of recurring, highly romantic dreams about a man named Michael, despite never having met him. Unbeknownst to her, these dreams are the result of a clerical error in 'Dream Central,' a celestial office where 'dream associates' construct human dreams from personal memories. A novice associate named Alura accidentally swapped memory tapes, placing Michael Roy, a real musician from Portland, into Grace's subconscious. Alura's supervisor, Harvey, discovers the mistake and warns that introducing a stranger into a dream is a violation of the 'universal order' with dire consequences. In the real world, Grace's life is at a standstill; her book is rejected by publishers for being 'too small,' and her sister Becky encourages her to find a permanent job. Driven by her dreams, Grace tracks Michael to a bar in Grand Rapids where he is performing. While Michael has no memory of her, they feel an immediate, inexplicable connection. They spend a whirlwind 48 hours together, traveling by train toward Portland. During this time, Michael reveals he is planning to give up music to work for his father's distribution plant, a 'practical' choice he clearly dislikes. Grace encourages him to follow his passion. Harvey and Alura manifest in the real world to intervene. They explain to Grace that if she continues her relationship with Michael, it will create a ripple effect that destroys his intended destinyβ€”a successful music career that brings him fulfillment. Harvey insists that Grace must agree to have her memories of Michael erased to restore the proper timeline. Realizing that her presence in his life might ruin his chance at his true dream, Grace selflessly agrees to the memory wipe. She wakes up with no memory of the trip or Michael, returning to her life as a temp. Months later, Grace has written a new story inspired by the 'feelings' she can't quite place, which is accepted by The New Yorker. Meanwhile, Michael has stuck with his music and written a hit song titled 'Grace,' inspired by a voice he kept hearing in his head. The film concludes when Grace attends a performance in her city and sees Michael on stage. Despite the supernatural intervention, the two meet 'for the first time' at the bar, and the spark of fate reignites, suggesting that true love is more powerful than the rules of Dream Central.
