    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens in a turn-of-the-century Irish coastal village where the fishing has gone dry, leaving the community in despair. Owen Quinn, a fisherman still mourning his wife Josephine who died five years prior, is left short-handed when his apprentice, Tomas Dunhill, abruptly quits. Dunhill soon begins catching massive hauls of fish, accompanied by a mysterious, silent woman. One night, this woman visits Owen, revealing herself to be a selchie—a legendary seal-person. She explains that Dunhill stole her skin, trapping her on land, and that she is the one bringing the fish to his nets. She begs Owen to help her recover her skin so she can return to the sea during the 'seventh stream,' a rare period of high tides. Owen consults the village elder and storyteller, Eamonn, who confirms the legends of the selchies and the King of Lochlann. Owen confronts Dunhill, who has become arrogant and abusive toward the woman. After a tense standoff where Dunhill threatens Owen, the situation escalates when Dunhill is found dead in the harbor, having been struck on the head. The local Sergeant suspects Owen due to their public feud. However, it is revealed that Eamonn, Dunhill's own father, stole the skin from his son to protect the woman and hidden it on Owen's property, hoping Owen would keep her safe. Owen takes the woman in, naming her Mairead. They develop a deep romance as she teaches him to look past his grief and 'book learning' to find the 'real knowledge' of the heart. Owen eventually proposes marriage, and Mairead accepts, choosing to stay on land past the seventh stream despite the legend that she will die if she does not return. As the tide recedes, Mairead falls deathly ill. In a climactic storm, Owen's friend Willy is nearly lost at sea, but Mairead's spiritual connection to the water seems to save the village's men and bring the fish back permanently. Realizing that Mairead will perish if she stays, Owen selflessly carries her to the ocean, returning her skin and letting her go. The film ends with Owen no longer 'lost on land,' having found peace through their brief, magical time together.
