An Uncommon Grace

The film opens with Grace Connor serving as a flight medic in a firefight in Afghanistan, establishing her trauma and medical expertise. She returns to her grandmother Elizabeth's farm to help her recover from a heart attack. The peace is shattered when their neighbor, Levi Troyer, arrives covered in blood; his stepfather Abraham has been murdered and his pregnant mother Claire has been shot. Grace uses her combat training to stabilize Claire and save her unborn baby. As Claire recovers, a mystery unfolds regarding the killer, who stole money from a horse auction. The local Sheriff Newsome and Deputy Small investigate, initially focusing on a local ex-con named Owen Peterson. Meanwhile, Grace and Levi develop a 'forbidden' attraction. Levi is a member of the ultra-conservative Swartzentruber Amish, who forbid even the most basic modern conveniences like reflectors on buggies or books. Levi secretly loves learning, a passion nurtured by Elizabeth. This draws the ire of Bishop Weaver and his daughter Zillah, who wants to marry Levi. Zillah eventually accuses Levi of 'bundling' (a traditional Amish courtship practice) to force a marriage, though Levi denies it. Parallel to this, Grace discovers her younger sister Becky has been selling family heirlooms. It is eventually revealed that Becky was pen pals with Owen Peterson and is being blackmailed by Deputy Small, who is the actual killer and a drug dealer. Small had murdered Abraham during a robbery and framed Owen. In the climax, Small attempts to kill Grace, Becky, and Owen to cover his tracks, but Levi intervenes, using a pitchfork to disarm the deputy. In the aftermath, Zillah confesses her lies, and Levi decides to leave his strict sect for a more moderate Amish order that allows him to be with Grace. Grace decides not to re-enlist, accepting a nursing job at the local hospital to stay with Levi and her family.
