The Wish Swap

The film opens with a narration about fate and coincidence, setting up the idea that the right person at the right time can change everything. Casey Carter celebrates her birthday at a restaurant with friends, while Henry MacMillan is there at the same time after a separate birthday dinner. The two end up sharing cake, blowing out candles together, and making wishes they refuse to share, immediately creating a playful but mysterious bond. Shortly after, the first strange consequence arrives: Henry gets a call inviting him to Dance Your Heart Out, the nationally televised dance competition Casey loves, while Casey is summoned to a lawyer's office and learns she has inherited her late great-aunt Gladys's small farm. Because Henry wishes he could own a small farm and Casey wishes she could be on the show, they begin to suspect their wishes somehow swapped. Casey convinces Henry to test the idea by making wishes again, but the reversal does not work, so they decide to help each other instead. Casey hires Henry to manage the farm part-time for a year, and in exchange he agrees to teach her how to dance for the competition. The arrangement throws them together every day: Casey learns farm work, Henry struggles through waltz rehearsals, and both slowly become more comfortable depending on other people. Their growing chemistry is reinforced by the farm community, including Henry's niece Charlotte and his farmhand Peter, who both become part of the orbit around the pair. As the dance competition moves forward, Henry and Casey advance despite their clumsy first rounds, and they even end up doing an offbeat stand-up opening act at comedian George Grant's show after Casey reveals another item on her birthday list. The public fun masks deeper feelings, though, because Casey is increasingly overworked between her recruiting job, the farm, and rehearsals, while Henry begins to realize he is more attached to Casey than to the wish-swapping theory. Their closeness grows into the possibility of real romance, but it is interrupted when Henry snoops on Casey's computer and discovers her third birthday-list item is to find love. Casey feels exposed and betrayed, especially because she has long been private and self-sufficient, and the two have a painful falling out. With advice from family and friends, Henry recognizes that he has to stop running from vulnerability and tell Casey how he feels. He apologizes and confesses that he has fallen deeply in love with her, and Casey admits she loves him too. They rush back to the live finale of Dance Your Heart Out, perform the tango together, and celebrate both the dance and the relationship they have built. In the end, Casey decides to start her own business, spend more time at the farm, and name it Wishful Meadows, while Henry embraces the life he always wanted and the love he never expected.
