Becca is a 30-year-old graduate student who has cycled through multiple majors, including English and Art, and is now struggling to find a thesis topic for her Psychology degree. Her advisor, Walt, encourages her to assist his niece Amy's fourth-grade class to find inspiration. There, she meets Emily, a quiet girl who copes with the loss of her mother by counting steps and drawing intricate maps. Becca, who lost her own mother at age seven, immediately connects with Emily's grief. She meets Emily's father, Nate, a professional geographer and mapmaker, and the three begin spending time together on 'play dates' involving ice cream challenges and miniature golf. Becca encourages Emily to express her feelings through metaphors, such as being a 'balloon without any air.' As Becca and Nate grow closer, Becca begins writing her thesis on Emily's emotional development, though she keeps the research a secret. During a trip to Nate's parents' cabin, Becca and Nate share a romantic moment under the stars, but Becca's lack of punctuality causes her to miss a promised star-watching session with Emily, leading to the girl's disappointment. The relationship reaches a breaking point when Nate discovers Becca's thesis draft, 'The Psychological Effects of Losing a Parent,' and feels that Becca has treated his daughter as a 'test subject' rather than a friend. He ends the relationship and forbids Becca from seeing Emily. Devastated, Becca nearly quits school again, but Walt challenges her to face her fears. At her final thesis presentation, which Nate and Emily attend in secret, Becca reveals that the true subject of her study was herself—how she used 'fun' to avoid the responsibilities of adulthood and the pain of her past. She credits Emily with teaching her how to be real. Nate realizes Becca's sincerity, and they reconcile, with Becca finally committing to a future with Nate and Emily.
