    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The protagonist builds a literal wooden fence across a shared rental patio to avoid her neighbor.
    • The neighbor is secretly the landlord and the owner of the children's summer camp.
    • The 11-year-old son attempts a dangerous open-ocean swim to a lighthouse at dawn.

    Full story (spoilers)
Jenna Turner, a disciplined single mother and author of teen fiction, arrives at a beach duplex for a five-week stay to finish her highly anticipated sequel. Her plans for a quiet retreat are immediately upended when she meets her neighbor, Lucas McKennon, whom she first encounters while he is using an outdoor shower on their shared patio. Lucas is the quintessential beach bum—messy, loud, and accompanied by a friendly but rambunctious dog named Tank. Jenna, who thrives on order, finds Lucas's lifestyle and his dog's constant intrusions intolerable, eventually hiring a contractor to build a literal wooden wall across their shared patio to maintain her privacy. As the summer progresses, a subplot develops involving Jenna's son, Nick, who is struggling with self-confidence and his goal of making the school swim team. Despite Jenna's initial distrust of Lucas, Lucas begins to mentor Nick, teaching him 'surfer-style' swimming techniques to improve his speed. Meanwhile, Jenna's daughter Ally bonds with Tank, further blurring the lines of the 'wall' Jenna tried to establish. The romantic tension shifts when Jenna discovers that Lucas is not the slacker she assumed; he is actually the owner of the summer camp her children attend, holds an MBA from UC Berkeley, and is in the process of franchising his business. They share a 'non-date' at a local seafood shack where Lucas encourages Jenna to stop trying to control every outcome, and Jenna begins to see him as a potential partner rather than a nuisance. The relationship hits a major obstacle when Lucas, caught up in a high-stakes business meeting with potential investors, misses Nick's final swim trial. Nick fails to hit his target time and is heartbroken, leading Jenna to lash out at Lucas for being unreliable and 'unattached.' In a desperate bid to prove himself, Nick sneaks out at dawn to swim to a dangerous offshore lighthouse—a feat Lucas had mentioned doing as a child. Jenna and Lucas find him just as he completes the swim. While Nick gains the confidence he sought, Jenna is terrified by the danger he faced and blames Lucas's influence. However, the film resolves when Jenna discovers Lucas is actually her landlord (the 'L.M.' of the rental agency). Lucas admits he couldn't stay unattached to her and the kids, and they reconcile on the beach. Jenna finishes her book, and the family decides to extend their stay at the shore to be with Lucas.
