    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The recurring presence of 'Le Pere Fouettard' (Father Whipper), a character who whips naughty children, leading to Mark being repeatedly kicked by local kids.
    • The 'Gnomes' subplot where characters must leave gifts for gnomes to avoid tricks like salt in their coffee.
    • A child (Sophie) acting as a professional 'informant' for an investigative journalist.

Why we’d put this one on

Jaicy Elliot and Brant Daugherty play a romantic copy editor and a cynical reporter sent to a French village to uncover the story behind an anonymous painting, guided by a vintage journal hidden in a music box. Weirdness 8, and the local color is wonderfully odd: Le Pere Fouettard, Father Whipper, who whips naughty children, leaving Mark repeatedly kicked by village kids, plus a gnomes subplot requiring gifts or you get salt in your coffee. This 2023 enemies-to-lovers Christmas mystery has no rating yet, but the French-market setting and the journal-detective hook give it a cozy, slightly fairy-tale charm.

    Full story (spoilers)
Leah is a copy editor at The Post who dreams of being a journalist and finding a 'fairy tale' love like the one in her favorite childhood book, The Doctor and the Maid. While shopping for a music box, she finds a hidden journal from 1959 written by an artist named 'F' to his love 'Ma Fleur.' The journal describes a secret romance at the Christmas Market in Petit Marchand, France, and contains a sketch identical to a mysterious painting currently on display at the Museum of Modern Art. Leah's boss assigns the story to Mark, a jaded, world-weary reporter known as 'Moody Mark,' but Leah uses her vacation days to join him, bringing the journal as her primary lead. Upon arriving in France, they stay at an inn where they meet Sophie, a young girl who wants to be a reporter. Leah insists on recreating the dates mentioned in the journal—eating candied apples and riding a carousel—to find clues, while Mark remains skeptical of her 'idealistic' methods. Their investigation leads them to a local woodworker, Bernard, and an ice cream shop owner who confirms the 'Ma Fleur' of the journal was Ava Auclair. As they grow closer, Leah helps Mark soften his cynical exterior, even setting up a romantic connection between a lonely resident named Marguerite and Bernard. However, the investigation hits a snag when Mark finds a hidden letter in a cathedral revealing that Ava never showed up to elope with 'F,' effectively ending their romance in heartbreak. Mark initially lies to Leah to protect her feelings but eventually confesses, leading to a conflict over journalistic truth versus romantic fantasy. Leah's mother helps her realize that real love is better than a fairy tale because it is grounded in reality. They eventually track down the elderly artist, Francois Renard, and discover that although he didn't marry Ava, he found a long, happy life with a sculptor named Celine. Leah writes a successful article that earns her a byline, and she and Mark realize they have found a real-life romance of their own.
