The film opens with Addie Watson, a logic-driven science enthusiast, traveling to Hawaii for her sister Kate’s wedding. Addie wears her grandmother’s heirloom engagement ring—a rare golden pearl—which her grandmother insists is magical, though Addie attributes its beauty to scientific phenomena. During a paddle-board yoga session at the resort, the ring slips off Addie’s finger and vanishes into the bay. Desperate, Addie seeks out Jack Wilder, a local dive instructor who lives on a sailboat called 'The Gem of the Ocean.' When Jack refuses to help on his day off, Addie accidentally becomes a stowaway on his boat, leading to a prickly introduction where he labels her a 'pirate bridesmaid.' Eventually, they strike a deal: Addie, who reveals she is a certified dive master, will assist in the search to cover more ground. As they conduct grid searches of the reef, a romance blossoms. Jack, who is saving for a solo trip around the world to honor his late father, finds Addie’s company surprisingly easy. Meanwhile, Addie struggles with a life-changing offer from her sister to become a 50/50 partner in their clothing company, 'Dear Watson.' A visit to a local marine research facility led by Dr. Mazur reignites Addie's dormant dream of becoming a marine biologist. The conflict escalates when a local beachcomber named Doug finds the ring and attempts to extort Jack for a high finder's fee. Without telling Addie, Jack uses his entire world-trip savings to buy the ring back from Doug. At the wedding, Addie gives a moving speech about finally believing in magic. In the resolution, Addie decides to stay in Hawaii to join a summer research program instead of returning to the family business. Jack returns the ring to her, and they realize their feelings are mutual, planning a future where they might sail the world together after her program ends.
