Full story (spoilers)
The film begins at Howell Elementary's spring fundraising concert, where music teacher Naomi Sacks is set to debut as the new vice principal. When she fails to appear, her father Norman and Hailey Dean become concerned. Hailey visits Naomi’s home and finds signs of a rushed departure, including dirty dishes and unfolded laundry, which contradicts an email sent from the school claiming Naomi was quitting. Hailey and her friend Fincher investigate the school and discover a large, partially cleaned blood pool in a restricted construction zone. Forensic analysis by Hailey's boyfriend, Jonas, confirms the blood is Naomi's rare type, shifting the case to a homicide investigation. Suspects emerge, including Janine Harwick, a teacher resentful of Naomi’s promotion, and Jeff Adkins, Naomi’s obsessive ex-boyfriend. Jeff carjacks Hailey in a desperate attempt to 'fix' something, clutching a mysterious envelope, but he is later found dead in an apparent suicide on land owned by Hailey’s old friend, Clyde Bennett. Naomi’s body is discovered nearby. Jonas determines that both Naomi and Jeff were actually strangled, and Jeff’s 'suicide' was staged post-mortem. Hailey discovers that the school’s fundraising money has vanished despite the construction being halted. While the school janitor admits to stealing Naomi’s laptop, he is cleared of murder. With the help of a hacker, Hailey recovers data from the laptop showing that Principal Becker was embezzling school funds to cover online gambling debts. Naomi had discovered the betting slips and the digital trail. In the climax, Naomi’s grieving father confronts Becker at the school with a gun. Hailey arrives and successfully de-escalates the situation, convincing Norman to let the law handle Becker. The film concludes with Clyde Bennett revealing he will lease the school back to the board for a nominal fee to keep it open. Hailey finally finds closure regarding her late fiancé Will by attending a college reunion with Jonas, officially introducing him as her boyfriend.
