    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens in Chicago with John William Goodnight, a brilliant but dissolute lawyer known for his gambling and drinking. After being arrested for property damage, he is summoned by the Governor, who surprises him by appointing him as a Circuit Judge for the Wyoming Territory. This appointment is a call to return to his roots; as a child, John survived a brutal stagecoach ambush that claimed the lives of his parents and his mentor, Judge Aldous Shaw. Raised by the Judge’s widow, Rebecca, John is gifted Aldous’s gavel and tasked with finding the killer—a man with a limp who stole his mother’s wedding ring. John travels the circuit, dispensing unconventional and often humorous justice, such as settling a dispute over bathtub priority and punishing a chicken thief by making him clean spittoons. However, the tone shifts when he encounters a town plagued by racial violence. Though he is forced to acquit a racist murderer due to lack of evidence, he later intimidates the man into fleeing, demonstrating his commitment to the spirit of the law. Upon arriving in the town of Crooked Stick, John meets Kate Ramsey, a widow and doctor who is one of the few residents willing to stand up to the local tyrant, Dan Reed. John immediately clashes with Reed by freeing a group of Cheyenne prisoners held without cause. As John and Kate grow closer, he notices she wears his mother’s wedding ring on a necklace. Kate reveals the ring was a gift from her father, Francis LeGrange. John initially suspects Dan Reed is the killer due to his limp, leading to a violent shootout in the streets of Crooked Stick where John and Kate fight side-by-side against Reed’s henchmen. After defeating Reed, John realizes Reed is not the man from his past. He travels to Laramie to confront Francis LeGrange, who is now an old man dying of natural causes. LeGrange confesses to the murders, admitting he spared John as a child to let him live in the nightmare of the memory. Resisting the urge to kill the dying man, John chooses the path of justice over revenge. He returns to Crooked Stick to return the ring to Kate, promising to return to her after he finishes his circuit.
