    Full story (spoilers)
The film begins in Chicago where Jenna, an idealistic environmental lawyer, and Kyle, a cynical corporate attorney, conclude a legal battle on opposite sides. Their professional rivalry is complicated by the fact that Jenna's brother Jim is married to Kyle's sister Trish. When Trish goes into labor on Christmas Eve in New York City, an ice storm grounds all flights, forcing the bickering lawyers to drive together. During the road trip, they clash over everything from music to Kyle's estranged relationship with his father, Christopher. Upon arriving in New York, they are immediately tasked with watching their niece, Karen, while Jim and Trish head to the hospital. Jenna and Kyle soon discover that Jim has lost his job and the family is facing foreclosure by a ruthless banker named Henry Kotter. In an attempt to save the house, they crash Kotter's Christmas party, but Kyle realizes his own law firm represents the company buying the property, creating a conflict of interest. The night takes a turn for the surreal when Kyle accidentally hits an elderly woman, Ethel Goodenthorn, with a door, causing her beloved dog Lamby to run away. The group spends the night searching for the dog, leading to Kyle's accidental arrest for purse snatching while trying to help a woman. After being released, they find themselves stranded in a stable with a horse named Gabriel. In a pivotal moment, young Karen calls a local radio station and tells the entire city about their family's plight, which touches the hearts of New Yorkers. Kyle eventually has a change of heart, reconciles with his father, and quits his firm to stop the foreclosure. It is revealed that Ethel is actually a billionaire who, out of gratitude for the return of her dog, hires Jim to manage her massive charitable trust. The film concludes with the birth of baby Christopher, the family home being saved, and Jenna and Kyle finally admitting their feelings for each other while ice skating at Rockefeller Center.
