Why we’d put this one on

Weirdness 10, and the premise is exactly as wild as it sounds: Candace Cameron Bure plays Noelle, a cynical store manager locked in a department store overnight, where a guardian-angel-in-training uses magical shoes to walk her through her past, present, and possible futures. The masterstroke is Jean Smart as Charlie, the trainee angel who freely admits she is bad at her job. Slip on a different pair of shoes, jump through time. Luke Macfarlane is the firefighter neighbor she might let in. It is A Christmas Carol by way of a shoe closet, gloriously strange, and at 6.5 a genuine treat.

    How it all plays out

    Full story (spoilers)
Noelle Carpenter is a disillusioned HR manager at Fulton’s department store who has abandoned her dreams of being a professional photographer following a painful breakup three years prior. While staying late to find an old employee file for her boss, Alex, Noelle is accidentally locked in the store during a massive snowstorm. In the shoe department, she encounters Charlie, a whimsical woman claiming to be a 'trainee' sent to help Noelle find her way. Charlie explains that 'every pair of shoes tells a story' and uses a pair of vintage heels to magically transport Noelle back to the Christmas Eve her ex-boyfriend broke up with her, highlighting how Noelle chose the 'safe' path of HR over her art. Charlie then shows Noelle a potential future where she is a world-renowned photographer. Back in the present, Noelle is rescued by Jake Marsden, a firefighter and her new neighbor. The two are tasked with co-planning the fire station’s annual Christmas charity gala, which Fulton’s is sponsoring. While Jake wants a fun, whimsical event with snow machines and candy canes, Noelle feels pressured by the store's owner, Mrs. Fulton, to keep the event 'tasteful, elegant, and refined.' Throughout their planning, Charlie continues to appear, taking Noelle on further 'shoe-trips'—one to a missed moment of connection with her father, and another to a future where she is married to a man who greets her with 'Honey, I'm home.' Conflict arises when Mrs. Fulton dismisses Jake from the planning committee for his 'unrefined' ideas. Noelle, fearing disappointment, initially fails to stand up for him, leading to a rift. However, after discovering that Charlie is actually the spirit of Charlene Pennymar, a former beloved Fulton's employee, Noelle realizes she must stop settling for being 'comfortable.' At the gala, Noelle quits her HR job to pursue photography full-time, reconciles with her father, and stands up to Mrs. Fulton. In a final twist, Noelle meets Jake’s brother, Will, and realizes he is the man from her 'future' vision. Despite this 'destined' match, Noelle chooses to stay with Jake, proving that she has the power to create her own future. The film ends with Noelle and Jake dancing at the gala as she embraces the 'possibilities' of her new life.
