    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with a tense exchange between two men, Craig and Rory, who fear they have been identified after a check fraud scheme. In Lawrenceton, librarian Aurora 'Roe' Teagarden is preparing for a birthday party for John Queensland, the boyfriend of her mother, Aida. Martin Bartell, Aurora's boyfriend, is shocked when his estranged niece Regina appears at Aurora's door with a two-week-old baby named Hayden. Regina explains she has been out of touch since her mother's death and is now married to a man named Craig. Aurora offers to let Regina and the baby stay at her house while she and Martin attend the party. During the celebration, Aurora returns home to a gruesome discovery: Craig Walker, Regina's husband, lies dead on her front porch, shot with a hunting rifle. Regina is missing, but Aurora finds baby Hayden hidden safely in the bathtub. Police Chief Lynn Smith and Detective Arthur Smith begin an investigation, while Aurora and Martin take on the role of temporary guardians for the infant. Aurora discovers $10,000 hidden in the diaper bag and finds Rory Brown, Craig’s accomplice, hiding in her linen closet. Martin, utilizing his CIA background, attempts to interrogate Rory privately, but the young man eventually escapes. Aurora’s investigation takes her to Corinth, where she discovers that Regina had no baby supplies in her home and had hidden her pregnancy from her husband's family. This leads Aurora to briefly suspect the baby was kidnapped, but a DNA test confirms Hayden is indeed Regina's son. Through reporter Sally Allison, Aurora learns about a local midwife, Bobbie Sunday, who has been linked to illegal adoptions. It is revealed that Craig and Regina, desperate for money, had agreed to sell their baby to a couple but Regina had a change of heart after the birth. The 'adoptive parents' followed them to Lawrenceton to claim the child by force. Aurora eventually realizes that 'Cathy Davis,' a woman Regina claimed was a friend, is actually a pseudonym for their neighbor, Margaret Granberry. The Granberrys, unable to adopt legally due to Luther Granberry's criminal record, are the ones who killed Craig and kidnapped Regina. The climax occurs when the Granberrys return to Aurora’s house to find the baby, resulting in a shootout where Martin and Rory are wounded. Aurora tracks the villains to the Granberry residence, where she finds Regina held captive in the basement. Aurora manages to protect the baby and assist the police in apprehending the Granberrys. The film concludes with Regina and Hayden reunited, Martin recovering from his injuries, and Aurora contemplating her own feelings about motherhood and her future with Martin.
