    Full story (spoilers)
In 2024, Lucy Clark is finally rewarded for years of sacrifice when she is made partner at her law firm. Even so, she is emotionally shut down: she works through Christmas, avoids her family, and treats her achievements like accomplishments to be managed rather than celebrated. Her assistant Spencer, her mother, and her sister Alex all try to pull her toward holiday warmth, but Lucy stays focused on work and on not feeling the loss of her father. While in Chicago, Lucy reconnects with Matt Olsen, the boy next door she once adored. He is separated from Jessi and still dreams of acting, while Lucy reveals how hard she has leaned into career ambition instead of relationships. Their conversation is interrupted by Grace, a mysterious ride-share driver who talks like a supernatural guide and asks Lucy whether she would do life differently if she could. Grace then drives Lucy home, but when Lucy wakes up she is not in her Chicago apartment; she is back at her mother’s house in 1999. Lucy quickly realizes she is nineteen again, living through the first Christmas after her father’s death. The past feels vivid and strange: old family routines, her younger sister, her dog Maxey, and all the technology and social habits of the late 1990s. Grace keeps appearing to remind her that this is a chance to gain perspective, but also warns her not to make major changes to the past or damage her future. Lucy is confused, resistant, and desperate to get back to her own life, but she starts to notice how much she has already been avoiding the people closest to her. As Lucy moves through Christmas week in 1999, she reconnects with Matt and Nadine and starts seeing her family through new eyes. She helps resolve a property-line dispute with a neighbor, advises Matt to pursue acting seriously, and watches her mother exhaust herself trying to make the holiday perfect while quietly grieving Rick. She also begins to understand how much she has been carrying alone, and how her habit of shutting down affects the people who love her. The more she tries to preserve the future she knew, the more obvious it becomes that her old path left her isolated. Lucy uses the time in the past to help the people around her confront hard truths. She encourages Matt to trust his talent and not hide from his passion, and she tells Alexa that it is okay to be herself and stop sacrificing her own happiness to keep the family stable. Nadine becomes the person who believes Lucy’s strange story and helps her make sense of what is happening. Through these conversations, Lucy realizes that grief pushed her to build a life around control, achievement, and emotional distance, and that she has been hurting herself as much as anyone else. On Christmas Eve, Lucy finally stops trying to preserve the lonely future she built. She tells Matt she has loved him for years, confesses that she wanted to kiss him at the ice rink, and admits that her greatest mistake was never saying how she felt. Matt responds by revealing that he has always loved her too and calls her his lobster, a soulmate who is meant to stay. Lucy’s choice to be honest becomes the emotional key that releases her from the time-slip. Lucy returns to 2024 to find a better life than the one she left: her family is together, Nadine is still in her life, Alexa is married, Matt is there, and Lucy is no longer defined by work alone. She is still accomplished, but now her success is paired with love, grief, and connection instead of isolation. Christmas morning becomes a true family celebration, and Lucy finally accepts that the future she wanted was not just a promotion, but a home full of people who matter.
