The film opens in Portland, Oregon, where Cleo Morelli is preparing her food truck, 'Cleo's Kitchen,' for the spring season. She prides herself on her grandfather Matteo's sandwich recipes, particularly his secret 'sapore' sauce. Meanwhile, Gabe, a talented chef who has spent years traveling the country in his 'Mo Bacon' truck, arrives in town to visit his brother Nate for his 30th birthday. Cleo and Gabe first meet at a farmer's market where they playfully bicker over the quality of persimmons, unaware they are about to become professional rivals. Gabe parks his truck directly across from Cleo's, and his bacon-centric menu—including items like bacon ravioli and bacon fried rice—quickly begins to siphon off Cleo's regular customers. The stakes rise when celebrity chef Norma Duncan announces the first annual City of Roses food truck competition with a $100,000 grand prize. Cleo's niece, Tessa, acts as her social media manager to help her qualify. Despite their rivalry, Cleo and Gabe begin to bond; Gabe helps Cleo in her garden, and they go on a 'food tour' of Portland. During a dinner they co-prepare for Nate's birthday, Gabe encourages Cleo to 'liberate' her high-quality ingredients from the 'narrow confines of bread,' suggesting she is capable of more than just sandwiches. However, tension arises when Gabe reveals he previously ghosted Norma Duncan five years ago due to the pressure of opening a restaurant with her.
