    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The protagonist's entire life trajectory is dictated by a specific bite of Comté cheese.
    • The corporate villainy is represented by 'escargot made of cod' and 'plastic cheese'.
    • The 'reverse bucket list' concept where you cross off things you don't want to do.
    • The heavy focus on 'cheese in a can' as a recurring insult for Americans.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with Ella working at Bistro Bon Vivant, a corporate restaurant chain where she pitches a 'Je T'aime Paris' menu. However, she is disheartened when the company's R&D department turns her artisanal vision into processed food, including a croque monsieur with 'plastic' cheese and escargot made of cod. Realizing she hasn't been truly happy since a trip to Paris a decade ago, Ella impulsively quits her job and moves to France for what is intended to be a short vacation. She sublets an apartment from Clotilde, a glamorous socialite who encourages her to 'nope out' of her old life and stay for the full three months allowed by her visa. Ella soon meets two very different men: Serge, a 'grumpy' cheesemonger who initially mocks her American tastes, and Gaston, a 'cad' and food critic who is immediately smitten with her. Seeking a deeper connection to the city, Ella convinces Serge to let her intern at his shop. As she learns the craft of cheesemaking, she helps Serge realize his dream of expanding his shop into a bistro, a project he had previously avoided out of a desire for a 'contained' life. Meanwhile, Ella dates Gaston, but a linguistic misunderstanding occurs when he tells her 'Je t'aime bien'—which Ella interprets as a deep declaration of love, though it actually means 'I like you.' Conflict arises when Ella's mother, Laurie, arrives in Paris. Laurie is a pragmatist who views Ella's stay as a 'midlife crisis' and pressures her to return to San Diego to buy a condo and find a 'real' job. This pressure, combined with Serge's emotional withdrawal after he learns about Gaston's supposed declaration of love, leads Ella to believe she must leave. However, at the grand opening of the new bistro expansion—organized by Clotilde, who finds her own calling as an event planner—Ella realizes she has found a community and a purpose. After a final confrontation with Gaston clarifies their feelings, and a heart-to-heart with her mother earns her Laurie's support, Ella heads for the airport. At the last moment, she realizes she cannot leave the 'richer, softer, sweeter' life she has built. She returns to the fromagerie, confesses her love to Serge using his 'reverse bucket list' philosophy, and the two agree to make a life—and cheddar—together in Paris.
