Why we’d put this one on

A fish-out-of-water ranch romance with a charmingly silly inciting incident. Autumn Reeser plays Julia, a Chicago socialite who, after a girls' trip to Wyoming goes sideways, ends up sentenced to thirty days of community service for knocking over a statue in a bar. She serves it on a struggling ranch, where she meets a stoic cowboy played by Eric Johnson and starts to question the polished life waiting back home. It is warm, low on weirdness, and easy to settle into. There is a fun "cowboy auction" where women bid to dance with the local men. Cozy boots-and-big-skies comfort with a likable lead.

    Full story (spoilers)
Julia Caldwell is a law student in Chicago working at her father's firm, living a life dictated by the expectations of her social circle. Her boyfriend Gavin, a high-powered corporate type, proposes to her in a grand public gesture involving a string quartet. Though she says yes, Julia is clearly overwhelmed by the prospect of a 400-guest wedding and a life at a corporate foundation. To escape the pressure, she joins her cousin Sydney on a trip to Wyoming. Their journey takes a turn when they hit a rock on a backroad, stranding them until they are rescued by Ben Thomas, a local rancher. At a local bar, a confrontation leads to Julia accidentally toppling a $30,000 statue of the town's founder. Judge Emmett sentences the two women to 30 days of community service, which they serve at Ben’s 'Destiny Ridge Ranch.' As they muck stalls and perform chores, Julia learns that Ben’s ranch is in severe financial trouble and facing foreclosure. She also discovers that the local hospital is desperately underfunded. Utilizing her organizational skills, Julia proposes a Valentine's Day fundraiser that doubles as a 'soft launch' for Ben's dream of turning the ranch into a dude ranch. Throughout the process, Julia and Ben bond over their shared experiences of losing parents and the struggle to live up to family legacies. Julia finds that the quiet of Wyoming allows her to 'hear her own voice' for the first time in years. The conflict peaks when Gavin arrives in Wyoming to bring Julia home. He is openly dismissive of the town, calling the fundraiser a 'pain' and mocking Julia's 'bleeding heart.' During the final Valentine's Day event, Julia realizes that Gavin does not respect the person she has become. She breaks off the engagement and returns the ring. In the film's climax, the town holds a 'cowboy auction' to raise the final funds for the hospital. Julia uses her own savings to outbid the competition for a dance with Ben. She reveals to her father that she is staying in Wyoming to help run the ranch, finally choosing her own path. The movie ends with Julia and Ben dancing, having saved both the ranch and the hospital.
