Thicker Than Water

The film begins following the death of Judge Charles Everett Travers, whose daughter Natalie is left with a mysterious box containing a photograph of her father with a trick rider named Maggie Mae Jarrett. Natalie’s family friend Abygail hints that the Judge had a secret past. Natalie travels to a rural California town, posing as a writer researching old rodeo performers to find Maggie Mae. She meets Jessie Mae 'Jess' Jarrett at a cemetery and learns that Maggie Mae has passed away. Jess, a rugged rancher, invites Natalie to stay at the ranch, where Natalie also meets Lulu, a teenager Jess took in, and Sam Nelson, the local veterinarian. Natalie struggles with the 'fish out of water' experience, particularly after eating 'dead' chili at a local diner that leaves her bedridden. As Natalie spends time on the ranch, she discovers Jess is in a legal battle with neighbor Tom Grove, who wants to break her lease to seize water rights. Jess is also dedicated to protecting a herd of wild horses that are dying of thirst because the natural springs have dried up. Natalie eventually confesses her true identity to Jess, revealing they are half-sisters. Jess explains that Maggie Mae left the Judge to protect his career and never told him she was pregnant. Despite the tension, Natalie uses her legal expertise to interpret Jess's lease, finding a 'grandfather clause' that allows them to restore an old spring. Natalie, Sam, and Lulu spend days digging until they successfully hit water, saving the horses and the ranch. Natalie briefly returns to her high-powered life in Los Angeles but realizes she no longer fits in. She sends Jess a DNA test confirming their sisterhood along with a $500,000 check from their father's estate. The movie concludes with Natalie returning to the ranch to pursue a relationship with Sam and build a life with her new sister.
