    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The plot heavily features a bullet hole in a wall from a parent's suicide, which is exceptionally dark for Hallmark.
    • Joey's obsession with the Golden Ratio (1:1.618) and Da Vinci's 'Last Supper' as a basis for gardening.
    • The protagonist makes a 'green energy drink' containing dandelion leaves and kale that characters react to with disgust.
    • The inheritance is structured as a literal 12-step philosophical program.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with Miss Sally Mae Anderson making final arrangements for her estate, Anderson House, with her longtime lawyer Ted Hamilton. She reveals she is terminally ill and wants her estranged grandson, Joey, to inherit the property to preserve the family legacy. After Sally passes away, Joey—a rebellious rock climber and traveler—is brought back to the estate. He is met by Jason Stevens, who has been tasked with mentoring Joey through a series of 'gifts' (Work, Money, Friends, etc.) similar to the ones Jason once completed. Joey is initially hostile, wanting only to claim his $5 million trust and leave. He meets Kelly James, a lawyer at Hamilton's firm, and their relationship begins with professional friction. Joey's first major task is the 'Gift of Work,' which involves building a memorial garden for Sally. He clashes with the groundskeeper, Gus, and rejects the professional landscape plans, instead using his own knowledge of the Golden Ratio (1:1.618) and physics to design a Japanese-inspired garden that accounts for local drainage issues. This reveals Joey's hidden intelligence and attention to detail. As the tasks progress, Joey is forced to confront the 'Gift of Money' by organizing a charity concert for 'Wish for Our Heroes.' He chooses to hold the event in the estate's riding hall, a place he has avoided because it contains a bullet hole from his father's suicide. Jason encourages Joey to find the 'Gift of Forgiveness' to truly be free of his past. During the concert preparations, Joey bonds with an injured veteran named Michael, using his knowledge of physical therapy to help the man regain strength. The concert, featuring singer Max Swayne, is a massive success, raising $350,000. However, a misunderstanding occurs when Joey's arrogant friends visit, leading Kelly to believe Joey hasn't changed. The conflict is resolved when Joey discovers a hidden video message from Sally and a secret legal clause. He realizes that he was actually co-owner of the house since age 18 and was always 'free' to leave, but the tasks were meant to help him find himself. In the climax, Joey chooses to stay, forgives his father, and uses his inheritance to create a $25 million endowment for Anderson House so that veterans can stay there for free. The film ends with Joey and Kelly beginning a romantic relationship, with Joey hinting at a future proposal.
