    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens in Paris, where Jane Da Silva is living her dream as a cabaret singer. Her life is interrupted by John Cameron, a Baltimore detective, who informs her that her Uncle Harold has passed away and left her an inheritance. Jane returns to Baltimore to reunite with her Aunt Sadie and discovers that Harold's legacy is 'The Foundation for Righting Wrongs,' a private agency that solves cases the police have abandoned. Despite her lack of experience, Jane is moved by Lia, a young girl whose mother, Linda Martin, died 15 years ago. The official report claims Linda committed suicide by drowning herself in a pool with weights tied to her body after losing her inheritance to a pyramid scheme called Inner Inc., led by the charismatic Dwayne Wayne. Jane begins investigating and encounters resistance from Linda's husband, Kenny, and her cold stepmother, Ella Donnelly. As Jane digs deeper, she receives a threatening note ('Bricks don't float and neither will you') and a brick through her window. She discovers Linda's dream journals, which mention a 'Birdie' and rainbows. Jane tracks down Richard Florian, a former friend of Linda's from group therapy, but finds him murdered in his studio just as she arrives. Jane eventually realizes that 'Birdie' refers to a specific painting style. She recognizes a painting in the office of Linda's former therapist, Dr. Hawthorne, that matches the descriptions in the journal. Jane deduces that Dr. Hawthorne and the local pool manager, Cindy, conspired to gaslight Linda, steal her $250,000 inheritance, and murder her when she tried to take the money back. Jane confronts Hawthorne, recording his confession as he attempts to attack her. The police arrive just in time to arrest Hawthorne and Cindy. In the aftermath, Dwayne Wayne, seeking to atone for his past scams, provides Lia with a full scholarship to Juilliard. Jane decides to stay in Baltimore and continue her uncle's work at the Foundation.
