    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The protagonist texts a dead man's phone number as therapy.
    • Joe uses a puppet voice named 'Lord Fluff 'n' Stuff' to predict the future.
    • The sister, Gail, provides an aggressive amount of casseroles as a primary personality trait.
    • Susan uses a megaphone/bullhorn to manage her house parties and ugly sweater contests.
    • Joe's family tradition of eating spaghetti and meatballs at 4:00 AM on Christmas morning.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film begins with Nicole and her fiancé Henry at their toy store, 'Village Toys,' where Henry's whimsical nature and love for children are on full display. They visit a fixer-upper house they’ve bought, and Henry promises they will have Christmas dinner there the following year. However, on Christmas Eve, while running out to get ice for a party hosted by their friends Susan and Tom, Henry is killed in an accident. One year later, Nicole is still paralyzed by grief. Encouraged by her realtor friend Tom, she decides to sell both the toy store and the unfinished house. To prepare the house for market, she hires Joe Roberts, a carpenter recommended by her employee Teddy. Nicole’s grandfather, Pops, shares that he healed from his own wife's death by writing her letters every day; Nicole adapts this by texting Henry’s old cell phone number. Unknown to her, the number has been reassigned to Joe, who recently lost his brother. Joe responds to the texts, and the two begin an anonymous, deep emotional correspondence about loss and moving forward. In person, Joe and Nicole develop a playful friendship as he works on the house, involving 'Genie Joe' magic tricks, 'Lord Fluff 'n' Stuff' puppet voices, and debates over 'breakfast for dinner.' Nicole also begins to rediscover her passion for knitting, encouraged by Joe and a local shop owner. The conflict peaks when Joe and Nicole agree to meet in person as their texting personas. Joe arrives at the restaurant first, sees Nicole waiting, and realizes he is the one she has been pouring her heart out to. Fearing she will feel betrayed or that he manipulated her grief, he flees and sends a text saying he can't make it. Nicole eventually discovers the truth when she finds Joe's phone. Feeling her trust was violated, she pushes him away. However, after receiving a handmade miniature of her house from Joe and talking with Pops and her sister Gail about the nature of mistakes and healing, Nicole realizes Joe's intentions were pure. She decides not to sell the house, opens an online knitting business called 'Nic's Knits,' and reconciles with Joe under the Christmas lights of the home they finished together.
