Why we’d put this one on

Weirdness 8 and a charming little fate machine. Elizabeth Mitchell is a widowed dance teacher and Cameron Mathison is a nomadic business consultant; they meet helping an elderly woman recover her lost Christmas Club savings, then keep colliding through a string of coincidences until his work threatens her studio. The whimsy is the hook: a handful of twenty-dollar bills seem to circulate through town like magic tokens, and one character, Gertrude, has an almost supernatural knack for being everywhere and knowing everyone's secrets. With a Hanukkah thread woven in too, it is warm, gentle, and quietly enchanted. A snug pick for a believer-in-fate kind of evening.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film begins with Olivia, a dedicated dance teacher and widowed mother, preparing her daughter Maeryn for a Christmas Eve recital. Her world is upended when her mentor Maggie announces her retirement and the sale of the dance studio. Simultaneously, Edward, a business consultant who avoids permanent roots due to his parents' messy divorce, arrives in town to visit his sister Beth. The two protagonists meet outside a bank when an elderly woman named Gertrude loses $80 in the wind. In a shared act of kindness, Olivia and Edward each contribute $40 of their own money and lie to Gertrude, claiming they found her bills stuck in a Christmas tree. This 'white lie' binds them together as they continue to encounter each other at a Christmas festival, a mural painting event, and a local bakery. The conflict intensifies when Edward realizes his client, Greg, is the one purchasing Maggie's studio, effectively putting Olivia out of a job. To make amends, Edward uses his consulting expertise to help Olivia find a new space on Camden Street and encourages her to apply for a small business loan to start her own studio. Their relationship blossoms over shared holiday traditions like baking cookies and riding in a horse-drawn carriage, but a rift forms when Olivia discovers Edward used his personal influence at the bank to guarantee her loan approval. Feeling her independence is undermined, Olivia pushes Edward away, fearing the vulnerability of a new relationship. However, after a chance encounter with Gertrude—who appears to be a guardian angel figure—Olivia realizes she shouldn't let fear dictate her life. Edward, prompted by a mysterious gift from Gertrude, returns to the studio during the Christmas Eve recital. The film concludes with the two reconciling, Edward deciding to stop his nomadic lifestyle to stay with Olivia, and the realization that Gertrude's 'lost' money was the catalyst for their shared destiny.
