    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The heavy use of a platypus as a metaphor for human personality types (ducks vs. otters).
    • A proposal being interrupted and ultimately ruined by a large, 'cute' iguana.
    • The protagonist's boyfriend describing marriage as a 'win' and a 'matching promotion' during the proposal.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with Michael 'Shep' Shepard managing his resort staff in Cancun with high energy, while in New York, Kate Mitchell delivers a successful marketing presentation at a top publishing house. Kate is up for a senior VP promotion, but she is exhausted by her numbers-driven life. She and her boyfriend Eric, an equally ambitious businessman, head to Cancun for a vacation. Upon arrival, Kate is shocked to run into Shep, her friend and fellow counselor from summer camp twenty years ago. While Kate hopes for a romantic getaway, Eric immediately becomes obsessed with networking with Gus Van Houten, a legendary developer staying at the resort. Eric repeatedly abandons Kate to play golf and go sailing with Gus, leaving Shep to step in and 'oversee' Kate's vacation. Shep challenges Kate to step out of her comfort zone, leading her on jungle hikes, zip-lining excursions, and paddleboarding lessons. During these activities, they bond over their shared past and their current dissatisfactions; Shep reveals he was once a high-powered divorce lawyer who fled the 'real world' after a failed engagement, while Kate admits she buried her dream of being a children's book author to succeed in marketing. A recurring motif is Kate's college manuscript, 'Peg the Platypus,' which Shep encourages her to finish. The conflict peaks when Eric stays overnight on Gus's yacht, missing a romantic dinner with Kate. Shep takes Eric's place at the dinner, and the two share a romantic dance and a deep connection. When Eric finally returns, he proposes to Kate, but his pitch is framed as a 'win' for their careers and a way to become a 'married power couple.' Realizing she is an 'otter' (creative and fun) rather than a 'duck' (corporate and rigid), Kate rejects the proposal and breaks up with Eric. Meanwhile, Shep has accepted a transfer to Tahiti to avoid his growing feelings for Kate. In the climax, Kate rushes to the town plaza and finds Shep at a fountain. She confesses that he helped her find herself again. Shep decides to stay, and they finally kiss. One year later, the couple is married and back at the resort as guests; Shep has returned to law as a family mediator, and Kate has successfully published 'Peg the Platypus' and taken over as an activities director.
