Kate is a quintessential New Yorker who finds comfort in her rigid routine and the philosophy of Owen Mueller’s book 'The Answer,' which preaches acceptance and staying put. When her editor, Francine, offers her a staff position on the condition that she interviews the reclusive Mueller in Banff, Kate reluctantly agrees to travel 2,479 miles with her photographer friend, Jayne. Upon arrival, they meet Noah, a talkative B&B owner, and his stoic partner, Simon. When Mueller initially cancels the interview, Noah—who is Mueller's former neighbor—intervenes to reschedule it, but only if Kate helps him improve his tour guide presentation for an upcoming travel agency evaluation. Kate finds Noah’s script factually dense and 'boring,' so she coaches him on modulation, eye contact, and charm. In return, Noah pushes Kate out of her comfort zone, taking her on a snowshoeing expedition up a mountain where she must face her fear of heights. The secondary plot follows Jayne and Simon, who develop a quiet romance that culminates in Simon creating a romantic chocolate-tasting 'grand gesture' for her. When Kate finally meets Owen Mueller, he delivers a shocking twist: he has abandoned his own theory of acceptance because falling in love taught him that staying 'planted' is actually a form of fear. Simultaneously, Noah realizes he loves Kate and heads to the airport to find her in New York.
