    Full story (spoilers)
The film begins with the death of Henry Dashwood, who leaves his estate, Norland Park, to his son John. Despite a deathbed promise to care for his stepmother and three half-sisters, John is manipulated by his greedy wife, Fanny, into providing almost nothing for them. While still at Norland, Elinor Dashwood forms a quiet bond with Fanny’s brother, Edward Ferrars, but their budding romance is cut short when the Dashwood women are forced to move to a modest cottage in Devonshire provided by a distant cousin, Sir John Middleton. In Devonshire, the sisters meet the stoic Colonel Brandon, who is immediately taken with the vibrant Marianne, though she finds him too old and dull. During a rainstorm, Marianne falls and is rescued by the charming John Willoughby, leading to a whirlwind and highly public courtship. However, Willoughby abruptly leaves for London without an explanation, leaving Marianne devastated. Elinor faces her own trial when Edward visits but appears distant and troubled; she soon discovers the reason when Lucy Steele, a social climber, reveals she has been secretly engaged to Edward for four years. The sisters travel to London with their neighbor Mrs. Jennings, where Marianne confronts Willoughby at a ball, only to be cruelly rebuffed. He later sends a letter announcing his engagement to a wealthy heiress. Colonel Brandon eventually reveals Willoughby’s dark past to Elinor, explaining that Willoughby seduced and abandoned Brandon's young ward. The emotional turmoil culminates when Marianne, walking in the rain in a fit of grief, contracts a life-threatening fever. Colonel Brandon proves his devotion by racing to fetch their mother, and his heroics finally win Marianne’s respect and affection. In the resolution, Lucy Steele abandons Edward to marry his brother Robert after Edward is disinherited for refusing to break his engagement. Now free and penniless but happy, Edward proposes to Elinor, admitting he always loved her. The film concludes with a double wedding for the sisters, as Elinor marries Edward and Marianne finds a mature, lasting love with Colonel Brandon.
