    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with Ruby Herring, a consumer reporter for 57 News, demonstrating a duct-tape escape technique before being promoted to the station's crime beat. Simultaneously, the Seattle PD reopens the cold case of Rose Vitello, a psychic known as 'The Pawn Reader' who was murdered in her shop five years prior. Ruby's transition to crime reporting is immediately complicated when an anonymous source begins leaving poetic clues at her door. The first clue leads Ruby and her father, retired investigator John Herring, to a river where they discover a discarded .38 Special revolver. Detective Jake Killian arrives to process the scene, and ballistics expert Dakota manages to recover the serial number, linking the weapon to Elijah Bards, whose son Henry sold it to Rose's pawn shop years ago. Ruby investigates Henry Bards, a local golf pro, and discovers that Rose Vitello was the reason Henry's fiancée, Sloan Waller, broke off their engagement. Meanwhile, a romantic subplot emerges as Ruby's ex-fiancé, Luke—a 'perfect' cardiologist—returns to town for their high school reunion, creating tension between Ruby and Jake. Ruby also looks into Travis Tru, a rival psychic who had publicly threatened Rose, and Rose's daughter Emily, who seems strangely cold regarding her mother's death. Another suspect, Captain Richard Kirk, is revealed to have a violent past and a motive for revenge after Rose dumped him, though he initially has a solid alibi provided by a harbor log. As the investigation deepens, Ruby discovers that Captain Kirk's son was actually piloting the boat on the night of the murder, breaking the Captain's alibi. However, a breakthrough occurs when Dakota finds a partial fingerprint on a bullet casing belonging to Monica Bards, Henry's current wife. Despite the physical evidence, Ruby's 'Herring Hunch' suggests Monica is innocent. Ruby notices that the anonymous clues she received use a specific date format (day-month-year) common in Singapore, where Sloan Waller had been living for five years. Ruby realizes Sloan returned to Seattle earlier than she claimed and has been stalking Henry, obsessed with the life she lost. At the high school reunion, Ruby confronts Sloan in the principal's office while the PA system is secretly active, broadcasting the conversation to the entire gym. Sloan confesses that she killed Rose in a fit of rage after the psychic refused to refund the money Sloan had spent on readings—money Sloan desperately needed to fix her life and win back Henry. Sloan admits she tried to frame Henry and Monica out of spite. Sloan is arrested, and the case is closed. In the aftermath, Ruby turns down a second chance with Luke, choosing instead to partner with Jake for a charity golf tournament, signaling the start of a new chapter in both her career and her romantic life.
