Ruby Herring Mysteries: Her Last Breath

The film opens with Ruby Herring, a consumer reporter for Seattle's Channel 57, performing a taste test between tap and bottled water. She is visited by Natalie Billings, the successful founder of Natalie's All Naturals, who is scheduled for a profile the following day. When Natalie fails to show up for the shoot, Ruby uses a find-your-phone app to track Natalie's location to a remote road. There, she discovers Natalie's car has gone over an embankment, and Detective Jake Killian informs her that Natalie did not survive. While the scene looks like an accident, a bear-monitoring camera reveals a mystery SUV fleeing the scene. An autopsy performed by Ruby's friend Tommy reveals that Natalie died from colchicine poisoning, a drug used for gout that is lethal in high doses. Ruby begins investigating the people in Natalie's life, including her sister Kate, who was recently cut out of Natalie's will; her boyfriend Steve, a bankrupt podiatrist; and Roger, a struggling artist who makes Natalie's daily smoothies. Ruby's investigation takes a turn when she discovers Natalie's new will leaves millions to her charity, Oceans Aware, and her staff. Ruby and Jake's professional relationship develops a romantic spark as they share a burger at a local diner and Ruby meets Jake's mother, a realtor. The investigation intensifies when a 'smoking gun'—a smoothie cup containing the poison—is found on Roger's boat, leading to his arrest. However, Ruby remains skeptical of Roger's guilt. She and her friend Jenny discover that the Chief Operating Officer of Natalie's company, Amanda Kelly, has been funneling charity money into a shell company called Coral Shore Enterprises with plans to flee to the Maldives. Ruby visits Amanda's home and spots autumn crocus plants in the garden. At a charity gala, Ruby confronts Amanda, tricking her into revealing that she knows the specific name of the poison before it was publicly released. Amanda is arrested, Roger is exonerated, and Ruby's father, a retired legendary crime reporter, encourages her to officially join the crime beat. The film ends with Ruby and Jake celebrating at a housewarming party for Jenny, hinting at a future partnership.
