    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The boyfriend's 'sub-lease' proposal is exceptionally cruel and weird for a Hallmark opening.
    • The recurring metaphor that 'King Kong was only three feet tall' as a lesson about LA appearances.
    • A serious editor being forced to do an author's pedicures as part of 'the creative process'.
    • The 'War of the Cornfield 1931' being treated as a potential blockbuster historical text.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens in Portland, where Natalie Holland is a dedicated editor of serious historical literature. Her life is upended when her boyfriend, Josh, reveals he is quitting his job to 'listen to the earth' in Machu Picchu and asks her to sub-lease his apartment instead of proposing. Seeking a fresh start, Natalie accepts a job offer in Los Angeles from her friend Avery. Upon arrival, she has a 'meet-cute' with Coop, who helps her find an apartment and claims to be a simple handyman and surfer. At work, Natalie is dismayed to learn her primary project is editing Beverly Wilcox, a legendary but notoriously difficult romance author. Beverly treats Natalie like a personal assistant, demanding she handle dry cleaning and pedicures while refusing any actual editorial feedback. Avery encourages Natalie to date men who are 'perfect on paper'—stable, successful, and ambitious. This leads Natalie to Bob Lewis, a charming lawyer she meets at a publishing gala. Bob seems to check every box on Natalie's list, and they begin dating. Simultaneously, Natalie continues to run into Coop, who mentors a young boy named Eli and runs a community garden. Natalie remains judgmental of Coop's lack of 'paper' credentials, unaware of his depth. The conflict peaks when Natalie tries to improve Beverly's latest manuscript by removing a repetitive character named Alfonso. Beverly is outraged and threatens to leave the publisher. It is later revealed that Bob Lewis is actually a rival publisher's scout; he manipulated Natalie's editorial integrity to frustrate Beverly so she would jump ship to his firm. When Beverly leaves, Avery's publishing house faces bankruptcy. Natalie realizes she was used by Bob and that her 'perfect on paper' philosophy led her astray. Eli eventually reveals to Natalie that Coop is actually John Cooper, a former Wall Street powerhouse who retired to Los Angeles to focus on philanthropy and community building. Natalie goes to Beverly to apologize and discovers that the author's real name is Margaret Bunn, a woman who originally wanted to write thrillers but was forced into the romance genre for success. Natalie convinces Margaret to reclaim her identity and publish her thriller, 'Alfonso's Web,' with Avery's firm. In the climax, Natalie prepares to return to Portland, feeling she failed, but Coop stops her. The film concludes with a successful book launch for Margaret Bunn, the announcement of a new partnership between Avery and Coop, and Natalie and Coop finally starting a relationship based on true character rather than a checklist.
