Full story (spoilers)
The film opens at Comfort Mills, where Carley Kincaid expects to be named Director of Quality Control. Instead, the CEO, Silas Redmond, gives the position to his son Wyatt, a charming but irresponsible socialite. Carley's best friend Jamie, a sommelier moving to Italy, makes Carley promise to change her life and follow her dreams of fashion design. Carley creates a list of resolutions to complete by the end of the year. When a major shipping error occurs due to Wyatt's negligence, Carley takes the fall and quits, while Silas cuts Wyatt off from his trust fund until he proves he can be serious. Wyatt visits Carley, and they form a 'self-help pact': Carley will teach Wyatt how to be independent and responsible, and Wyatt will help Carley complete her resolutions, which include running a 5K, making new friends, and upgrading her sewing skills.
As the month progresses, Wyatt moves into a modest apartment in Queens and learns to take his job at Comfort Mills seriously, while Carley trains for her race and takes intense sewing lessons from Wyatt's housekeeper, Gertie. They bond over shared grief—Carley's father left when she was young, and Wyatt's mother passed away years ago. Wyatt introduces Carley to his friends Kendra and Brad, and they participate in a Jackson Heights caroling stroll, where Carley begins to see the 'real' Wyatt. However, conflict arises when Carley's mother, Millie, discovers Carley was fired and feels betrayed by the secret.
In the final act, Carley's dream dress is accidentally ruined by a candle fire, causing her to lose hope and attempt to get her old job back. Wyatt intervenes, encouraging her to believe in herself. He reconciles with his father, Silas, but chooses to leave the family company to find his own path. Carley finishes a new dress, completes her 5K race, and sends her portfolio to designers. The film culminates at a New Year's Eve party Wyatt throws at his new apartment. Carley arrives in her handmade dress, and as the countdown begins, she checks off her final resolution—'say yes to adventure'—by initiating a kiss with Wyatt at midnight.
