The film begins in New York City, where Mandy Cooper works as a tireless assistant to Deidre Kelley, a high-powered PR executive. After successfully managing a crisis for a children's book author, Mandy asks for more responsibility, but Deidre dismisses her, using a bizarre metaphor about Mandy keeping her ketchup in the refrigerator simply because the bottle says so, rather than questioning the status quo. Meanwhile, Prince Colin of Edgemere is arrested in the small town of Greenbriar, Idaho, for 'bathing' in a historic fountain, creating a PR nightmare for the royal family. Deidre is hired to fix his image, but upon arriving in Idaho, she contracts chicken pox from a child on the plane. Bedridden and contagious, Deidre sends Mandy to the initial meeting. When Penelope Sheridan, the Royal Communications Director, assumes Mandy is Deidre Kelley, Mandy impulsively goes along with the lie to prove her worth. Mandy (as Deidre) meets the rebellious Prince Colin and the local Sheriff Wrigley. She successfully negotiates a deal where Colin performs community service instead of facing jail time. Over the following days, Mandy guides Colin through various public appearances, including volunteering at a pediatric ward and participating in a local festival. They bond over shared pressures of living up to parental expectations; Colin reveals he feels trapped by his title, while Mandy shares her drive to succeed for her family. A romantic spark develops, highlighted by a scene where Colin plays an 80s power ballad on a piano to show his rebellious side. Penelope eventually discovers Mandy's true identity but chooses to remain silent because Mandy's strategy is working better than the real Deidre's likely would have. The conflict escalates when Lady Isabella, Colin's secret fiancée, arrives in Greenbriar to join the PR campaign. Mandy is heartbroken to learn of the engagement. The situation reaches a breaking point during a formal banquet when the real Deidre, now recovered, arrives and exposes Mandy's lie in front of the Queen and Colin. Colin feels betrayed by the deception, and Mandy is fired by Deidre. Mandy returns to New York, but Deidre, impressed by Mandy's 'chutzpah' and the success of the Idaho campaign, decides to keep her on and even promotes her. Deidre encourages Mandy to go to the Queen's Jubilee in Edgemere to make things right. At the Jubilee, Colin breaks off his engagement to Isabella, realizing he wants a life based on truth rather than duty. Mandy arrives at the ball, they reconcile, and they dance to an orchestral version of 'Keep on Loving You,' finally embracing their relationship on their own terms.
