    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • A local Christmas betting pool tracks which disaster Ted will suffer next.
    • Ted and Hope get trapped overnight in a Santa-themed escape room that treats failure like a North Pole crisis.
    • A Christmas rave and a limo ride appear as part of the holiday date chaos.

    Full story (spoilers)
Ted Cooper is a beloved but perpetually unlucky local weatherman in Corning who opens the story with a Christmas forecast and a running joke about the disasters that seem to follow him every holiday season. He is headed to Lackawanna, his hometown, to help publicize his sister Kate's Gingerbread Invitational, a charity event meant to raise money for a children's wing at the local hospital. Ted insists that this year will be different, even as his coworkers and family casually place bets on what Christmas mishap will happen to him next. Back home, Ted immediately gets into one accident after another, including a box of Christmas lights to the head and a suitcase mix-up that leaves him briefly dressed in a bright pink sweater from a college student's luggage. That mishap leads him to the hospital, where he reconnects with Hope Newbury, the smart and capable doctor who was his high school crush. Their reunion is awkward and flirtatious, and it becomes clear that Hope remembers Ted as a sweet, slightly nerdy classmate while Ted has never quite gotten over her. As Ted spends more time in town promoting the fundraiser, he and Hope keep running into each other through a string of holiday activities: Ruth Mittens, Ted's former teacher, helps him with a Christmas tree and pushes him toward dating; Hope's hospital tour shows Ted the meaningful work behind the new children's wing; and a burger date with Hope reveals that both of them have a hard time being fully honest in relationships. Hope is overworked and still grieving the loss of her father, while Ted is so eager to please everyone that he rarely advocates for himself. Their chemistry grows as they talk about the lives they have built since high school and the lives they still want. Ted and Hope's turning point comes when they end up trapped overnight in a Santa-themed escape room after what should have been a fun date. With no phones and no easy exit, they finally open up about their baggage: Ted admits he has spent his life making himself small to keep everyone else comfortable, and Hope admits she is afraid people leave when life gets hard. The date ends in shared vulnerability, and it becomes the closest they come to romance before a series of misunderstandings derails them. The central conflict arrives when Ted loses his phone and Hope mistakenly thinks another woman has answered it. That miscommunication makes Hope think Ted is not serious, while Ted misreads her silence as rejection. She confronts him for being too surface-level and for always putting other people's needs before his own, and he is hurt by the idea that she has not really seen him. The emotional rupture forces Ted to realize that his cheerful exterior has been keeping him from the kind of honest love he wants. On the day of the Gingerbread Invitational, Kate and Ruth help push Ted and Hope back toward each other. Ted chooses to accept a job in Buffalo, which is closer to Hope, and on live television he finally says the quiet part out loud: he wants a future that includes the girl he likes. Hope responds by showing up, admitting she wants him to fight for what he wants, and the two reconcile in time for Christmas. The fundraiser succeeds, Ted's bad luck gives way to a run of good fortune, and he closes the broadcast by declaring it the best Christmas ever.
