    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The mothers engage in high-level surveillance and real estate manipulation to force their children together.
    • Tony's superstition is extreme, including a fear of black cats that causes physical collisions and a refusal to put hats on beds.
    • The mothers plant specific song requests at a professional lounge to manipulate their children's emotions.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with Mia Rivera, a literature professor, giving a cynical lecture on the 'needy' nature of romantic poetry, reflecting her own disillusionment following a divorce from her alcoholic ex-husband, Casey. Meanwhile, Marlene (Mia's mother) and Sofia (Tony's mother) meet by chance at a screening of the classic film 'Penny Serenade.' Realizing they both have single adult children who need a push, they form an alliance to set them up without their knowledge. Their scheme begins with a 'meet-clumsy' where Tony, an incredibly superstitious lounge singer, accidentally knocks Mia over while trying to avoid a black cat. The mothers escalate their plan by ensuring Mia moves into an apartment directly across the hall from Tony in Brooklyn. As neighbors, Mia and Tony begin a tentative friendship. Tony invites Mia to his show at a supper club, where he performs her favorite song, 'Somebody to Watch Over Me'—a request secretly planted by the mothers. Though Mia is wary of Tony’s 'charming' persona, she begins to see his depth when he takes her to a retirement home to perform for his Uncle Harry’s birthday. However, conflict arises through Mia’s ex-husband, Casey, who is struggling with sobriety and manipulative tendencies. Casey lies to Tony, implying that he and Mia are reconciling, while Tony is seen by Mia with a beautiful woman who turns out to be his sister, Valeria. These misunderstandings lead to a brief period of estrangement where both characters retreat into their shells, with Mia returning to her cynical teaching style. In the climax, Mia’s friend Nick stages a 'fire alarm' intervention to force her out of her funk. Mia goes to the Vogue theater to watch 'Penny Serenade' alone, only to find Tony there. They confront their misunderstandings—Tony realizes Casey lied, and Mia realizes Valeria is his sister. Tony references the movie they are watching, noting that while Cary Grant says one kiss is all it takes, it really just has to be the 'right' kiss. The film concludes with Mia and Tony performing a duet of 'Something Stupid' at the supper club, fully supported by their families and Mia's daughter, Rosie, signaling a new beginning for both.
