    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The film features real historical figures like the Vanderbilt family and Susan B. Anthony in a fictional murder plot.
    • The protagonist is a 'poor Vanderbilt' which is a specific Gilded Age niche.
    • The murder weapon is a gilded ram's-head cane topper.

    Full story (spoilers)
Emma Vanderbilt-Cross, a society reporter for the Newport Observer and a 'poor relation' of the wealthy Vanderbilt family, begins the film interviewing Susan B. Anthony, reflecting on the theme of female independence. During her cousin Gertrude’s lavish debutante ball at The Breakers, tension rises as Emma’s half-brother Brady attends despite the disapproval of Uncle Cornelius. The night turns tragic when Alvin Goddard, a business advisor, is found dead after falling from a balcony. Stolen railway plans are missing from the safe, and Brady is found unconscious in the office with gold flecks in his hair, leading to his immediate arrest. Emma, convinced of his innocence, begins an investigation alongside Detective Jesse Whyte, despite her editor's warnings to stay away from the scandal. She encounters a mysterious man named Derrick Anderson (later revealed to be Derrick Andrews, a Boston heir), who is secretly investigating the health of Rupert Halstock. Emma's list of suspects grows to include the fired butler Mr. Mason and her cousin Neily, who needed money to marry into a rival family. However, clues like a gilded ram's-head cane and a gold eyeglass chain point elsewhere. The investigation takes a dark turn when Emma is nearly run off the road by a carriage. Eventually, Emma realizes the truth: her best friend Adelaide Halstock is the killer. Adelaide had been slowly poisoning her husband Rupert to escape his abuse and stole the railway plans to fund her escape. When Goddard caught her in the act, she struck him with Rupert's cane and pushed him over the balcony. She later killed Rupert when he discovered her theft. In a tense climax at a childhood hideout, Adelaide threatens Emma with a gun before Jesse intervenes. Brady is exonerated, Emma regains her job, and she chooses to maintain her independence as a writer while navigating potential romances with both Jesse and the departing Derrick.
