    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • A criminal organization that communicates exclusively through the Sunday crossword puzzle.
    • The 'convicted by pie crust' scene where Tess proves a woman is lying because she has boxes for frozen tarts.
    • A puzzle writer using a funeral home as a front for their mail.
    • The concept of a 'practice round' at a crossword tournament being used as a forensic linguistic trap.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film begins with a daring midnight heist at the Nightingale Gallery, where owner Alan Nightingale is shot dead and a valuable painting of a horse is stolen. Tess Harper, the crossword editor at The Sentinel, is busy preparing for the 17th Annual National Crossword Puzzling Championship under the mentorship of the tournament head, Pierre. Tess's aunt Candace, a friend of the victim, mentions the murder, leading Tess to notice something bizarre: the crossword found in the victim's pocket was filled out in cursive and only contained 'across' answers. Tess realizes the puzzle clues—'Bird' (Nightingale), 'Cinderella' (midnight curfew), and 'Yearling' (a young horse)—perfectly mirror the details of the crime. She brings this to Detective Logan O'Connor, who is initially dismissive, comparing her theories to seeing shapes in clouds. Tess continues her investigation, discovering that the puzzle's author, 'Abigail Krebbs,' is a phantom identity using a funeral home as a mailing address. Meanwhile, Logan discovers that the gallery's security system was intentionally disabled by an assistant named Carmichael, who was paid to go to Florida. Tess's friend Harris, a crime reporter, begins digging into Nightingale's past in the archives but is mysteriously murdered in his office before he can share his findings. Tess finds a photocopy Harris left behind showing an old photo of Alan Nightingale with a 'silent partner.' Tess and Logan coordinate a 'trap' during the crossword tournament, using a practice puzzle filled with British slang and nautical terms to identify the 'Phantom' constructor. Tess eventually discovers two missing shell casings from the murder weapon inside Pierre's bag. She realizes Pierre is actually Chesley Nightingale, Alan's brother, who was presumed dead but was actually a convicted felon in Britain. Pierre confronts Tess in a stairwell, admitting he used the crosswords to communicate heist details to thieves like Morton to commit insurance fraud. He murdered Alan because his incompetence threatened the scheme and killed Harris to protect his true identity. Logan arrives just in time to apprehend Pierre. The film concludes with Logan and Tess acknowledging their mutual respect, with Logan calling Tess a 'Saturday puzzle'—the smartest and most challenging of the week.
