Love to the Rescue

The film begins by introducing Kate Healy, a creative and somewhat disorganized animator and single mother to Sophia, and Eric Smith, a highly organized PTA president and single father to Owen. Both children have their hearts set on adopting Bruce, an older, shy dog from a school adoption event. When both families claim the dog simultaneously, the shelter coordinator suggests a one-month co-fostering period to see which home suits Bruce best. This arrangement forces Kate and Eric into each other's lives, leading to immediate friction between Kate's 'free-spirit' approach and Eric's 'laminated rules' lifestyle. Kate is currently struggling to find a meaningful ending for her animated short film, 'Light The Way,' which her studio hopes will be an Oscar contender. Meanwhile, Eric is stuck in a bureaucratic job at the Department of Transportation, though his true passion lies in affordable housing advocacy. As they trade Bruce back and forth, Eric ropes Kate into volunteering for the school's spring carnival. Kate stages a 'fun coup,' replacing Eric's rigid, traditional plans with a vibrant 'CandyLand' theme. Their relationship deepens during a series of 'dog-related' encounters, including a disastrously awkward dog obedience class called 'Fuzzy Friends Time' where they are accused of flirting. Eric's girlfriend, Bianca, eventually breaks up with him after realizing they lack 'passion,' a realization sparked by seeing the connection between Eric and Kate. Eric encourages Kate to embrace romance in her film, arguing that love is the ultimate motivator for courage. This inspires Kate to rewrite her film as a love story. However, fearing that Sophia will get too attached to a temporary situation, Kate tries to pull away from Eric. Her ex-husband, Liam, provides a crucial pep talk, explaining that she hasn't experienced 'grown-up love' and shouldn't let fear dictate her life. In the climax, Kate's film wins the Grand Jury Prize at an animation festival. During her acceptance speech, she publicly acknowledges that Eric taught her about belonging. The film concludes with Eric applying for his dream job and the two families deciding to merge into one household, finally giving Bruce a permanent 'forever home' with both of them.
