Why we’d put this one on

Danielle Panabaker plays Joy, a driven D.C. market researcher who heads home to Crystal Falls to care for her injured Aunt Ruby and ends up defending Ruby's title in the town's fiercely contested Cookie Crawl. Matt Long is the childhood acquaintance she reluctantly teams with. What sells it is the baking-competition mania: this town treats its "dough reserves" as a critical resource and calls its hungriest residents "baking locusts." It is a sturdy career-versus-roots story with a good lead and plenty of frosting. If you want a Christmas movie where the central conflict is genuinely about cookies, Joy has your back.

    Full story (spoilers)
Joy Holbrook is a workaholic market researcher in Washington D.C. vying for a promotion to Director at MacDonald-Webber. After impressing the prestigious client Poppy Weatherton during a focus group, Joy's career seems set, but she is suddenly called home to Crystal Falls, North Carolina, because her Aunt Ruby has broken her ankle. Ruby is the four-time winner of the 'Cookie Crawl,' a massive town event involving elaborate decorations and thousands of cookies. Joy agrees to take over Ruby's duties and is paired with Ben Andrews, the local hospital administrator and Ruby's long-time 'co-captain.' Joy initially tries to manage the project with spreadsheets and data, while Ben advocates for a more 'classic' and sentimental approach. They strike a deal: Joy will judge the town's gingerbread contest (freeing Ben to compete with his mother) if Ben helps her with the physical labor of the Cookie Crawl. As they work together, they rediscover their childhood connection, culminating in a romantic ice-skating outing where they settle on a 'Mother Nature' theme for the Crawl. However, Joy's boss, Margie, continues to pressure her with remote work, creating a conflict between Joy's professional ambitions and her growing love for her hometown. A crisis occurs when a freezer fails, destroying their 'dough reserves,' but the community rallies to help them bake through the night. Joy eventually leaves for D.C. to attend the firm's Christmas Gala, where she realizes the corporate culture is hollow. After Poppy Weatherton pulls her account from the firm due to Margie's poor management, Joy quits her job. Ben, who had secretly driven to D.C. to see her, feels intimidated by her high-society life and leaves without speaking to her. Joy returns to Crystal Falls for the Cookie Crawl, where Poppy Weatherton surprises her with a job offer to lead a new marketing division in nearby Charlotte. Ben arrives at the event, confesses his fears, and the two reconcile, with Joy choosing to stay in North Carolina for good.
