Why we’d put this one on

Vanessa Lengies plays a toy-company data analyst sent to Jersey City to figure out why one store is thriving, where she clashes with Jesse Hutch's old-school manager who believes in Christmas magic over spreadsheets. Weirdness 8 comes from the Magic Elf Dust at the center of the plot, hinted to be 30-year-old sand from Coney Island, plus a pitch for Sally Claus, Santa's sister, as a hot new toy. At 6.4 with an enemies-to-lovers spark, it is a likable spin on the save-the-store formula. She even carries a hand-carved wooden reindeer from childhood in her purse.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens at the Big Teddy Toy Company headquarters, where lead data analyst Charlie Sawyer identifies Store 24 in Jersey City as the only location with rising revenue despite a company-wide decline. David, the head of strategy, lobbies the board to close all brick-and-mortar stores and move exclusively online. To prevent mass layoffs, Charlie is sent to Store 24 to analyze their strategy. Upon arrival, she is mistaken for a seasonal employee by the manager, Grant Leviston, who is skeptical of corporate interference. Charlie eventually reveals her identity and begins observing Grant’s 'old school' methods, which include elaborate story times and the distribution of 'magic elf dust' to children. Despite their initial friction, Charlie realizes that the store's success is tied to these community events rather than corporate-mandated displays. Grant takes Charlie to his grandfather’s abandoned shop, Trinket Town, where they bond over their shared love for toys; Charlie reveals her secret hobby of toy design, and Grant encourages her to pursue it. The conflict escalates when David convinces the board to begin closing West Coast stores early, threatening the timeline of Charlie's research. Charlie pivots her strategy, proposing that Store 24 become a 'flagship' model to save the retail division. She and Grant organize a massive holiday party to impress the board members. However, the board decides to open a flagship store in Las Vegas instead, effectively sealing the fate of the Jersey City location. Disillusioned by the corporate coldness, Charlie quits her job and rejects a promotion to Vice President. She returns to Jersey City to give Grant’s niece, Emma, a prototype of 'Sally Claus'—a toy based on the girl's idea of Santa’s sister. Grant reveals he is reopening Trinket Town as an independent shop, and Charlie agrees to partner with him as a toy designer. The film concludes with Grant confessing he used his 'magic elf dust' to wish for a future with Charlie, and the two share a romantic moment in the newly revived toy store.
