    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The protagonist is famous for a fantasy franchise called 'The Asterlight Chronicles' involving dragon slaying.
    • A paparazzo hides in a tree to take photos of a small-town mayor.
    • The 'fake dating' sacrifice made by the ex-boyfriend to save the mayor's privacy is a bit of a narrative stretch.

Why we’d put this one on

A movie-within-a-movie holiday romance with a winning lead pairing. Taylor Cole plays Jessica, a famous actress who rolls into tiny Homestead, Iowa to shoot a Christmas film and falls for the local mayor and lodge owner, Matt (Michael Rady). The meta touch is fun: she is best known for a dragon-slaying fantasy franchise called The Asterlight Chronicles, and a paparazzo literally hides in a tree to snap the small-town mayor. It is fame-versus-home comfort done with real charm. At 6.6, a cozy, knowing watch for anyone who loves Hallmark poking gentle fun at how its own movies get made.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with Jessica McEllis, a world-famous actress known for the 'Asterlight Chronicles' dragon movies, arriving in Homestead, Iowa, to produce and star in a new Christmas film. She is joined by her co-star and ex-boyfriend, Vince Hawkins, and her publicist, Rosalie. Upon arrival, Jessica has a 'meet-cute' at a local bakery with Matt Larson, whom she mistakes for a service worker; she soon discovers he is actually the town's mayor and the owner of the Homestead Lodge where she is staying. Matt, a widower raising his young daughter Sophie with the help of his sister Zoe, is initially skeptical of the Hollywood production, fearing it will ruin the town's traditional 'Festival of Lights.' As filming begins, Jessica struggles to balance her professional responsibilities with her growing attraction to Matt's grounded lifestyle. She wins over the town by participating in a snowman-building competition and bonding with Sophie, who is a massive fan of Jessica's work. However, conflict arises when a paparazzo named Ian snaps a photo of Jessica and Matt in an intimate moment, causing a media frenzy that threatens Matt's privacy and his daughter's peace. Vince, still carrying a torch for Jessica, complicates matters by trying to rekindle their romance. To protect Matt from the spotlight, Vince eventually makes a selfless sacrifice by faking a public reconciliation with Jessica to draw the paparazzi away from Homestead. In the climax, the production requires one final scene to be filmed during the town's Festival of Lights on Christmas Eve. Matt, realizing he doesn't want to lose Jessica, interrupts the set to confess his love and ask her to stay. Jessica breaks character during the final take, improvising a speech about finding a home and a family, effectively choosing a life with Matt. The film concludes with the two sharing a romantic kiss as the town celebrates the holiday.
