A Soldier's Love Story

The film begins with Dana Marshall and her ten-year-old son, Jared, moving from Iowa to California to live with Dana's mother, Louise, following a painful divorce. Jared is deeply unhappy, missing his friends and feeling abandoned by his father, Gil, who rarely returns his calls. At his new school, Jared's class is assigned to write letters to soldiers stationed in Bosnia. Jared writes to Sergeant Vince Carrera, sharing his struggles with baseball and his father's absence. Vince, who grew up in a similar situation, is moved by the letter and begins a correspondence. When Vince's unit returns to Fort Sebastian, just 25 miles from Dana’s home, he decides to visit Jared in person. The surprise meeting sparks an immediate connection, and Vince offers to coach Jared in baseball, specifically helping him train as a catcher. As Vince spends more time with the family, Dana begins to open up to the possibility of love again, encouraged by her mother’s faith-based wisdom. However, Vince carries trauma from his own past; his ex-wife left him during a previous deployment because she couldn't handle the distance. Despite their growing feelings, Vince and Dana go on a formal date to a Moroccan restaurant but are shadowed by the knowledge that Vince's time at home is temporary. When Vince receives orders for redeployment to Africa, the couple mutually decides to break up to avoid the pain of a long-distance military relationship, believing it is the 'selfless' thing to do for one another. Jared is devastated by the news and the impending loss of his mentor. On Jared's birthday, Gil fails to show up or call, but Vince leaves a thoughtful gift—a professional catcher's mask. Realizing how much they truly mean to each other, Jared writes a final letter to Vince explaining how miserable his mother is. Vince arrives at the house just before leaving, and he and Dana confess their love, realizing they are strong enough to survive the deployment together. The movie ends with a heartfelt goodbye at the bus, with the promise that they will remain a family through letters, emails, and video chats until his return.
