This is where it all started. Before the long-running series, there was this 2013 origin film, and it is fun to watch the pieces fall into place. In 1913, high-society Elizabeth Thatcher defies her family to teach in a rough frontier town, guided by the secret diary of her namesake aunt. The dual-timeline structure is unusual for a standard Hallmark movie, with Maggie Grace and Stephen Amell carrying the earlier thread and Poppy Drayton the later one. There is a memorably grim detail too: a schoolteacher being hauled around in a hearse. If you love the Hope Valley universe, going back to the source is worth it.
