Full story (spoilers)
The film begins in the Kingdom of Bundbury, where American artist Wes Riverton is finishing a portrait of Princess Amelia. Wes claims to see a 'twinkle' of sadness in Amelia's eyes, sparking a romantic connection. After Wes returns to Chicago, Amelia's mother, Queen Ava, plans a diplomatic trip to Los Angeles to visit Amelia's uncle, Andreas. Amelia hopes to use this trip to see Wes, but her mother insists on a strict schedule of diplomatic duties. Amelia attempts to sneak away and drive herself to Chicago, but she is caught by Grady Beck, a security professional hired by her uncle. Recognizing Amelia's need for independence, Uncle Andreas gives Grady his prized Mustang and instructs him to drive Amelia to Chicago, taking the 'heat' from the Queen himself.
The journey becomes a transformative road trip. In Utah, the pair goes camping, where Amelia experiences her first s'mores and learns about Grady's past as a rancher's son who left Nebraska to avoid becoming 'hardened' like his father. In a small town, they attend a spring festival where Amelia wins a ring-toss game and gives her expensive designer dress to a local girl named Becca so she can dance with her crush. As a storm hits Colorado, they stay at a B&B run by Rosie and Arnie. Amelia is so moved by their 50-year marriage and their financial struggles that she leaves them a pair of priceless diamond earrings (a gift from the French Ambassador) to help pay their property taxes.
The duo then visits Grady's family ranch in Nebraska, where Amelia helps Grady reconcile with his father. Through these experiences, Amelia realizes she is falling for Grady's genuine nature. Upon finally arriving in Chicago, the reunion with Wes is a disappointment; he is preoccupied with his art opening and views Amelia more as a subject for 'good press' than a partner. Realizing Wes doesn't truly know her, Amelia leaves him and returns to her mother in Los Angeles. Queen Ava, seeing her daughter's growth, gives her blessing for Amelia to follow her heart. Amelia returns to Nebraska during Grady's parents' anniversary party, where she and Grady confess their love and commit to a new adventure together.
