    Full story (spoilers)
The film begins with Lily Jamison’s backstory in Marietta, Georgia, where her sister Beth was her biggest supporter. Lily’s talent leads her to the New York Ballet, where she falls in love with her dance partner, Mark Anders. On the night she is set to debut as the Sugar Plum Fairy, Beth is killed in a car accident while driving to the show. Devastated, Lily insists on dancing to honor her sister, but Mark, fearing she is too unstable and will injure herself, convinces the director to pull her from the show. Feeling betrayed and broken, Lily quits ballet entirely and returns home to help raise Beth's daughter, Sadie. Eight years later, Lily is a yoga instructor when Sadie is invited to be a guest artist in a Philadelphia production of The Nutcracker. Upon arrival, Lily is shocked to find that Mark is the Artistic Director. The reunion is fraught with tension; Lily remains cold, still harboring resentment for the night her career ended. However, they are forced into proximity as they live in the same apartment building. As rehearsals progress, the lead dancer, Juliette, proves to be a difficult diva, and the 'dance moms' at the studio spread rumors that Sadie only got the role because of Lily’s past relationship with Mark. When Juliette eventually quits in a fit of rage, Mark asks Lily to help coach the understudy. During this time, Lily learns that Mark left ballet for years to serve as a Gunnery Sergeant in the military before returning to direct. This revelation, combined with a heart-to-heart about the night of the accident, leads Lily to realize Mark was only trying to protect her. In a final twist, the replacement lead and her partner walk out just before opening night. Lily and Mark, having reconciled their feelings, decide to step into the roles of the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Prince themselves. The performance is a massive success, Sadie is offered a full scholarship to the ballet school, and Lily and Mark commit to a future together in Philadelphia, finally moving past their shared grief.
