    Full story (spoilers)
The film opens with Liv Rose, a photographer for The Chronicle in San Francisco, contrasting the city's elegant Christmas traditions with her parents' 'overblown carnival' style of celebrating. Her parents, Jack and Ivy Chang, are 'Christmas hoarders' preparing for the 25th anniversary of their massive neighborhood party. Liv meets Henry, a new writer from Bangkok with a South African accent, when he takes a candid photo of her. Their editor, Charles, assigns Henry a cover story on the 'Changtastic Christmas party' and pairs him with Liv, unaware that she is the Changs' daughter. Liv attempts to sabotage the story and hide her identity, even speaking Cantonese to a family friend, Mrs. Lin, to keep Henry in the dark. However, Henry—who lived in Guangzhou and speaks Cantonese—quickly realizes the truth. As they work together, Liv and Henry bond over a boat ride and a visit to Old St. Mary’s Cathedral, where Liv reveals her passion for finding beauty in the ordinary. Henry shares his homesickness, and Liv begins to soften. The conflict peaks when Liv and Henry deliver the party's red envelopes (community donations) and lose the bag on a cable car while Henry is acting like a 'tourist.' This leads to a devastating confrontation where Liv calls her parents' party a 'circus' and 'embarrassing.' Her mother, Ivy, deeply hurt, tells Liv it would be best if she didn't attend the party. During a 'mental health day,' Liv encounters a neighbor at the cathedral who helps her realize that Christmas is about community and light. Henry interviews Liv's parents, who express their deep pride in her despite the conflict. Liv decides to stop running from her identity; she goes live on social media as 'Liv Rose Chang,' explaining her childhood trauma of being bullied for her heritage and asking for donations to replace the lost funds. At the party, the community rallies together. A neighbor named Nora returns the original lost bag of money, resulting in a record-breaking donation year. Liv reconciles with her family by performing 'O Holy Night' in Cantonese, a tradition she had abandoned years prior. The film concludes with Liv and Henry beginning a romantic relationship, now fully integrated into the 'Changtastic' family fold.
