    Full story (spoilers)
The film begins in Los Angeles, where James White, a successful lawyer, and Sadie Ryder, a dedicated doctor, are celebrating their professional achievements. James proposes to Sadie, but she insists that they cannot marry until he meets her family in Pine Gap and receives her father's blessing. Upon arriving at the Ryder family's working ranch, James immediately struggles to fit in. A series of mishaps occur: he crashes their car after a horse runs into the road, gets his leg caught in a bear trap inside the house while searching for a bathroom, and accidentally offends Sadie's father, Karl, with his 'fancy' vocabulary and French-influenced tastes. Karl, a stubborn rancher who harbors a deep-seated hatred for lawyers, remains unimpressed by James's attempts to help. The conflict escalates when James tries to use his legal expertise to mediate a dispute between Karl and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) regarding grazing permits. Karl views James's suggestion of a compromise as a betrayal of the ranching way of life. Meanwhile, Sadie's ex-boyfriend, Clint, attempts to sabotage the relationship with the help of Sadie's Aunt Trudy. Clint eventually unlatches a gate to let the ranch's cattle escape, framing James for the negligence. This leads to a heated confrontation where Karl orders James off his land. Determined to prove his worth, James takes a wild, unbroken horse named Haywire into the mountains to find the lost herd. He spends a freezing night in a cave, using survival skills he learned from Sadie's brother, Travis. The following morning, James finds Karl, who has been injured in a fall. When a wolf threatens the injured Karl, James overcomes his fear of firearms and shoots the predator, saving Karl's life. Back at the ranch, the truth about Clint's sabotage is revealed. Karl finally gives James his blessing and gifts him his great-grandfather's spurs. In the final resolution, James calls his firm in L.A. to decline a partnership, choosing instead to move to Pine Gap to open a local practice and marry Sadie.
