    Wait, what?

The quirks and curveballs that make this one a little weirder than your average Hallmark. No spoilers, promise.

    • The protagonist is a 13-year-old boy rather than the typical career-woman lead.
    • The plot involves a child acting as a middleman for a bootlegger to buy a dog.
    • A significant plot point involves a character nearly dying from 'bad moonshine' alcohol poisoning.
    • The grandfather predicts the weather using his knee with 100% accuracy.
    • The dog is trained to operate a CB radio to call for help.

    Full story (spoilers)
The film is narrated by an adult George McCray, looking back on the winter of 2003, which he describes as the most defining period of his life. Six months after his father, John, died in a freak farm accident, George is living with his grandparents, Bo and Cora, on their Kansas dairy farm. His mother and sisters have already moved to Minnesota, but George has stayed behind until Christmas, struggling to let go of the farm and his father's memory. The story begins when their neighbor, Frank Thorne, is arrested for drunk driving. Despite his usual rule that 'dogs and dairy cattle don't mix,' Grandpa Bo agrees to look after Frank’s neglected dog. George names the dog Tucker, and the two become inseparable. George finds solace in Tucker's company, even as he faces the pressure of playing Santa in the school play alongside his friend Mary Ann. As Christmas approaches, Frank Thorne is released from jail and reclaims Tucker, leaving George heartbroken. Desperate to get the dog back, George offers to buy Tucker with his savings, but Frank refuses. Meanwhile, a massive ice storm begins to settle over the region. Grandpa Bo, suffering from a worsening lung infection, teaches George how to operate the heavy snowplow so the boy can help clear the roads for the community. During his rounds, George encounters Frank, who is sick and suffering from withdrawal. Frank offers George a deal: if George fetches 'medicine' from a local man named Tom Turner, they can discuss selling the dog. George realizes Turner is a bootlegger but makes the delivery anyway, driven by his desire for Tucker. However, the 'medicine' is a bad batch of moonshine that causes Frank to collapse from alcohol poisoning. George finds Frank unconscious and uses the snowplow radio—with Tucker's help—to call for help, ultimately saving Frank's life. In the aftermath, George confesses his deal with the bootlegger to Grandpa Bo. Disappointed in George's lack of character, Bo insists that George return Tucker to Frank, as the dog was obtained through a dishonest bargain. George complies, devastated but understanding the lesson. On Christmas Eve, the family gathers, and Frank Thorne arrives at the house. Transformed by the McCrays' kindness and his near-death experience, Frank reveals he has taken a job that requires travel and asks George to keep Tucker permanently as a gift. The joy is compounded when George's mother announces she is moving back to Kansas because she realizes she belongs on the farm with her family. The film concludes ten years later, with adult George graduating college and taking over the farm, having just proposed to Mary Ann, with an elderly Tucker still by his side.
