The film begins with Jaylen Rodriguez, the recent winner of 'Pop Star USA,' performing her hit single 'Baby, My Baby' and preparing for an upcoming tour. After a paparazzi intruder is discovered at her rental home, her manager Benny and the record label insist on 24/7 security. Jaylen meets Matt Lowis, an ex-Navy SEAL, when he accidentally tackles her on her property while performing a security sweep, inadvertently smashing her garden gnome, Lenny. When Jaylen returns to her hometown of Squirrel Hollow for the holidays, she panics at the thought of her family's overprotective reaction to a bodyguard and introduces Matt as her boyfriend. Matt, a strict professional who 'plots, plans, and executes,' is forced to participate in the Rodriguez family's intense Christmas traditions, including a living nativity (Nacimiento) where he is cast as a Wise Man. Throughout the week, Jaylen struggles with her label's desire to keep her a 'manufactured' pop star, while Matt and Jaylen's brother Hector discover anonymous, unsigned notes being left for her. Matt encourages Jaylen to use his military motto, 'Semper Fortis' (Always Courageous), to take control of her career. This culminates at the town's tree lighting ceremony, where Jaylen goes rogue and performs an authentic, bilingual song instead of the label's approved track. During the event, Matt tackles a suspicious figure approaching the stage, only to discover it is Jaylen's ex-boyfriend Eddie, who was merely trying to deliver a poem. The truth comes out when Jaylen discovers Matt and Hector were hiding the notes from her; she feels betrayed by their lack of faith in her strength and confesses the 'fake boyfriend' charade to her family. After a heart-to-heart with her friend Lorelei and her Abuela, Jaylen demands her family stop treating her like a child (nicknamed 'La Cobaya' or Guinea Pig). On Christmas morning, Matt returns to the family's nativity scene in full costume to apologize, admitting that while he was hired to protect her, he ended up falling for her. The family watches from the window as the two share their first real kiss, and Jaylen's career takes off on her own terms.
